Info PhotoRecognized as one of the premier cycling events in the West, the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate in the 29th Anniversary of the Death Ride®, while enjoying the magnificent scenery and warm hospitality of Alpine County!

This year’s ride returns riders to our infamous five pass course including:

  • Monitor Pass (8,314')
  • Ebbett's Pass (8,730')
  • Carson Pass (8,573')

Beginning and ending at Turtle Rock Park just north of Markleeville, California, the five pass ride includes 129 miles and 15,000+ feet of lung busting climbing. You also have the option of riding one, two, three or four passes. For your safety, the first four passes will be closed at specific times to vehicular traffic.

Five pass finishers will receive a five-pass pin and be eligible to purchase an exclusive five-pass finisher jersey.

Start & Cut-Off Time:
Generally, the start-time is 5:30am. Starting before 5:30am requires proper lighting. Riders not planning on completing all passes please start a little later to avoid congestion. Line up at the Turtle Rock Park start area to be let on the course when it opens. All riders must be off the course by 8:00 pm.

Road Closures:
From 5:00am - 9:00am, the road will be closed to traffic from the Markleeville Courthouse to the junction of Highways 89 & 4. Monitor & Ebbetts Pass’ will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at 5:00 am.

Required Safety Rules:
Safety is the most important factor of this event. The organizers insist that you adhere to the safety information for your safety and the safety of fellow riders.

  • Stay single file and to the right at all times
  • Be alert to other riders
  • Control speed on descents
  • Obey all traffic laws, even on closed roads
  • Heed Course Marshal warnings
  • Be aware of vehicular traffic
  • No earphones, iPods, MP3 players, etc.
  • No aerobars and/or child carriers
  • Approved helmets are always required
  • Watch for bumpy road conditions & cattle guards
  • Be prepared for hazards (tubes, pump, etc.)
  • Unexpected weather changes can occur so be prepared (cold, heat, wind, rain, hail, and snow)
  • Beware of unexpected wind gusts
  • Carry proper gear (water, extra layer, sunscreen, food, etc.)
  • Use proper lighting if starting before daylight

Expo PhotoWhile we have tried to outline the necessary information for you to have a safe ride, please remember that this event can be dangerous! Be careful, your safety is your responsibility. Ride at your own risk! Safety violators will be removed from event and future events. Camping along Highway 89 outside your car is dangerous and not recommended.

Death Ride Expo:
Be sure to visit the many booths at the Death Ride
® Expo. Exhibitors will provide products and services ranging from tech-support to souvenir items. The expo takes place on the Friday and Saturday of the Death Ride®.

Clothing Drop-Off:
Drop-off or retrieving of personal belongings will NOT be available during the 2009 Death Ride
®. It is your responsibility if you leave any personal articles along the course or at any rest stop. We will not retreive any items. We will not ship lost and found items. The Death Ride® nor any of its affiliates are responsible for your belongings. Due to unpredictable weather we sugguest you carry your personal items at all times.
