Riding 129 miles and climbing 15,000+ feet in one day is a daunting task! To make this event even more difficult, the course is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains at elevations between 5,000' and 8,732'. We urge cyclists to visit Alpine County before the ride to get an idea of what it takes to complete the Death Ride®. Browse Arnie Baker's website and check out The Death Ride® Edition of Altitude Climbing Endurance Training. We also suggest riding other mountainous rides, such as the Near Death Experience, The Kiss of Death, the Sierra Century or the Climb to Kaiser, prior to the Death Ride® to test your fitness level.

Near Death Experience:
The Death Ride
® training camp. Includes a reserved entry spot in the 2008 Death Ride® (does not include entry fee.) If you participate in the Near Death Experience and are also selected for the Death Ride®, you will forfeit one entry.

Kiss of Death™:
A smaller, quieter cycling experience over the same mountain roads that provides a fun alternative. Limited to a dozen riders, we challenge ourselves on all of the same bicycles climbs of the Death Ride
®, plus a few more. But instead of doing them all in one day, we do them over a long weekend. We will provide a reserved Death Ride® entry to any confirmed 2008 Kiss of Death™ guest who requests one on a first come, first served based (does not include Death Ride® entry fee.) If you participate in the Kiss of Death™ and are also selected for the Death Ride®, you will forfeit one entry.
Kiss of Death™ Info

Be Prepared:

  • Include lots of climbing in your training
  • Be prepared to spend a minimum of 8 hours on your bike
  • Stay hydrated
  • Eat regularly before and during the ride
  • Check your insurance coverage. Helicopter transport is very costly!
  • Carry extra tubes, pump, tools, rain or cold weather gear, identification, sunscreen, chapstick and extra water bottles

Bike Gearing for Climbing:
We recommend a 39 on front and a 28 on back, a triple or a compact.

Tune Up Your Bike:
Be sure you have good brakes and good tires. You must be able to control your bike and your speed on steep downhills, with possible wet and/or rough pavement.
